The Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) have officially suspended Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) from all association activities, citing a severe governance crisis and a “blatant disregard” for regulatory directives.
The drastic decision was communicated in a formal letter dated June 26, 2026, signed by the Chairman of VCTU-G, Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, and addressed to the Chairman of the BTU Governing Council.
The suspension follows an emergency review by the VCTU-G on June 15, 2026, which scrutinised the turbulent administrative developments at BTU. At the centre of the crisis is the BTU Governing Council’s decision to suspend, investigate, and ultimately terminate the appointment of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Erasmus Alnaa.
In addition to axing the Vice-Chancellor, the BTU Governing Council demoted two other key management officers and issued a stern warning letter to a third official.
According to the VCTU-G, multiple attempts to intervene and broker peace between the feuding parties were stonewalled by the leadership of the BTU Governing Council. The association expressed “grave disquiet,” noting it faced significant constraints and was unable to even secure an audience with the Council leadership for deliberations.
More damningly, the VCTU-G highlighted that the BTU Council has continuously ignored several directives issued by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the country’s statutory tertiary education regulator, aimed at resolving the ongoing stalemate.
“The measures adopted in this matter represent an unprecedented exercise of Council authority in a manner that threatens established principles of university governance,” the VCTU-G statement read.
The VCTU-G further pointed out that the BTU Council’s aggressive overreach stands in sharp contrast to a recent directive issued by His Excellency the President of the Republic. The President had explicitly ordered public boards and chairpersons to confine themselves strictly to policy direction and oversight, rather than interfering in the day-to-day management of public institutions.
Stating that the decision “has not been taken lightly,” the VCTU-G emphasised that the suspension will remain in place until the matter is fully resolved. The association hopes this freeze will provide a crucial window for reflection, engagement, and the restoration of confidence in BTU’s governance structures.
The letter has been copied to high-level stakeholders, including the Minister for Education, the Director-General of GTEC, the Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, and the embattled Prof. Samuel Erasmus Alnaa.
