In a day defined by both solemn reflection and vibrant celebration, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Lawra, Hon. Cecilia Soyelleh Nuratu, demonstrated her deep-rooted commitment to community and education. Her presence at two significant local events on Thursday highlighted a leadership style that balances grassroots empathy with a clear vision for the future.
The MCE began her day in Babile, attending the Adu’a funeral of Shaibu Lotaa’s brother. Alongside the Babile Zonal Coordinator and the NDC Constituency Secretary, Hon. Nuratu joined the community in a heartfelt tribute to the deceased. In her address to the grieving family, she emphasized that communal solidarity is the bedrock of healing, reaffirming her role not just as a leader but as a supportive neighbor in times of loss.
Turning her attention to the next generation, Hon. Nuratu later joined the 6th Speech and Prize-giving Day at Lawra Senior High School. The ceremony, which celebrated academic excellence, drew a distinguished guest list, including the Representative of the Paramount Chief of Lawra, Naa Puowelle Karbo III, and the Vice Chancellor of UBIDS. They were joined by former headmasters, CHASS members, and officials from the Regional Education Directorate to honor the students’ hard work.
During the festivities, Hon. Nuratu underscored several key government policies designed to lower the barriers to education. She spoke passionately about the “no fees stress” initiative, the introduction of free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, and the strategic decentralization of food procurement—a move intended to both feed students and stimulate the local economy through school feeding programs.
To provide a tangible boost to the school’s infrastructure, the MCE donated 10 sets of street lights, aimed at improving safety and visibility on campus. Furthermore, she pledged her continued backing for the school’s ongoing assembly hall project, recognizing the need for a modern, multipurpose space to facilitate student growth and school events.
Hon. Nuratu was supported throughout the day by a dedicated delegation, including Lawra Constituency Secretary Hon. Alexis Kuuridong and Municipal Internal Auditor Mr. Sampson. This collective presence of local leaders underscored a unified front committed to the holistic development of the Lawra Municipality.
