The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations in partnership with the National Communications Authority, is set to commemorate the International Day of People with Disabilities with the theme ‘“Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.” with a local theme: “Assistive Technology: Empowering lives, Advancing Inclusion’
An interactive quiz competition will be held between students from the Mampong School of the Deaf and the Akropong School of the Blind. This competition, which will be aired on GTV, is designed to highlight the intellectual capacity and academic achievements of students with disabilities, societal preconceptions and foster awareness
This crucial national event will bring together leaders from government, development partners, the private sector, innovators, and disability rights advocates at the NCA Towers in Accra on Wednesday, 3rd December 2025, starting at 9:00 am. The convening aims to push disability inclusion from mere rhetoric into real, tangible, and measurable change across the nation.
The commemoration is anchored on the global theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” but will be guided by a powerful and highly relevant local theme: “Assistive Technology: Empowering lives, Advancing Inclusion.” This specific focus highlights the critical role of technology and innovation in breaking down barriers, enhancing independence, and ensuring full participation for all persons with disabilities in Ghana’s rapidly evolving national landscape.
A key feature of the day will be the GFD Honours & Awards Ceremony. This honour is dedicated to recognising and celebrating distinguished personalities, institutions, policymakers, corporate bodies, advocates, and development partners. These awardees are individuals and entities whose sustained leadership, investment, and advocacy have provided fundamental support and tangible progress, strengthening the disability movement and actively advancing inclusive development across the country.
In direct support of the local theme, the event will host an extensive Assistive Technology Innovation & Exhibition. This platform will showcase groundbreaking solutions, prototypes, and practical inventions developed by Ghanaian researchers, creatives, and, importantly, female innovators with disabilities. This exhibition is designed to give attendees a glimpse into the future of accessible technology and demonstrate the powerful, transformative potential of locally developed solutions.
The program will also feature a crucial High-Level Panel Dialogue, bringing together thought leaders from government, academia, civil society, and industry. This will focus on strategic pathways required to build a resilient, inclusive communication technology and an innovation-driven disability ecosystem. The ceremony will also include keynote speeches delivered by national leaders and global partners who are actively shaping the discourse on disability rights, inclusive governance, and equitable development.
A historic documentation, the “GFD Journey Chronicle,” will be officially launched during the event. This significant publication will trace the evolution of disability rights in Ghana, chronicling key successes, struggles, leadership transitions, major advocacy milestones, and the increasing influence of the disability movement on national policy and development.
The GFD extends a warm and urgent Call to National Partnership, inviting all stakeholders, including government Ministries, MMDA, CSOs, media organisations, private sector actors, academia, and the general public, to actively join this national movement. This collective action is crucial in reaffirming Ghana’s deep-seated commitment to building an inclusive society where every citizen is valued, empowered, and fully integrated into national progress.
