In a bid to promote transparency and public participation in the utility sector, the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq, recently presided over a regional public hearing on utility tariff proposals for the 2025–2030 multi-year tariff review. The event, organized by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), brought together various stakeholders, including utility providers, civil society representatives, and consumer associations.
In his address as the guest of honor, Hon. Puozuing highlighted the importance of balancing the economic realities of service providers with the social and developmental needs of consumers. He emphasized the government’s commitment to reforming the utility sector to ensure affordability, reliability, and sustainability in electricity and water services, particularly in underserved areas.
The Minister commended the PURC for its efforts to engage the public through regional fora, such as the one held in Wa, underscoring the importance of open dialogue in policy decision-making. He also lauded utility companies such as the VRA, GRIDCo, NEDCo, and GWL for subjecting their tariff proposals to public scrutiny, emphasizing the principles of good governance and corporate accountability.
Hon. Puozuing called on all participants to approach the utility tariff review process with patriotism, fairness, and foresight, recognizing the crucial role of efficient and affordable utilities in driving economic growth, health, and human dignity. He urged stakeholders to contribute constructively to outcomes that would benefit the people of the region and the nation at large.
The Minister’s address underscored the need for collaborative efforts among government, regulators, service providers, and consumers to ensure a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous utility sector in Ghana. By upholding the values of transparency, inclusivity, and accountability, the country can build a foundation where citizens trust institutions, regulators act with integrity, and every individual enjoys access to essential utility services.
As the utility tariff review process continues, the call for collective responsibility and informed participation remains crucial. Hon. Puozuing’s message serves as a reminder of the shared commitment needed to shape a better future for Ghana, where efficient and affordable utilities are not just a goal but a reality that benefits all citizens.
