Last Monday, November 24, 2025, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. James Wor, officially broke ground for the construction of a new dam in Duang, is located around Issa off the Kojokperi road. This project is a deliberate strategic investment aimed at overcoming one of the biggest challenges facing northern agriculture: the long, punishing dry season.

The Dam project is a key pillar of the Assembly’s plan to dramatically boost agricultural output and farmer incomes. The DCE stated that the goal is to create an ‘irrigable zone for vegetable farming,’ with the Duang community being a beneficiary

In a Social Media post, the DCE announced ‘The project aims to restore a reliable water source for local farms and provide clean water for livestock. Once finished, the dam is expected to support dry-season farming in the area”

DBI is one of the very 50 districts earmarked for a Farmers’ Service Centre across the country, with DBI being a key target for one of these centres, given the district’s role as a food-growing area. Kojokperi has been cited for the service centre.

The DBI has approximately 78% to 90% of the economically active population engaged in agriculture, with most farmers farming less than 2 hectares on average. crops such as Millet, Maize, Sorghum, Groundnut, Cowpea, Soyabeans. They also farm Roots and tubers, with yam production increasing year on year.

The practice mainly involves mixed farming and compound cultivation around the household, which is characteristic of staple food production in the Upper West Region.

In a nod to the district’s strong agricultural identity, this year’s Farmers’ Day celebrations are scheduled to take place in Bussie. As a large market destination, Bussie is the perfect setting to recognise the hard work of the local farmers and highlight DBI’s critical role in feeding the region.

The Duang Dam project is more than just a pool of water; it’s an investment in resilience, ensuring that the farmers of DBI can thrive regardless of the season and fulfil their potential as leaders in Ghana’s agricultural transformation!
